What is it?

What is Beat the Box?

In Beat the Box, participants are divided into small groups ("boxes") of 4 to 16 players. Within each box, everyone plays everyone else. After each round of sets, the best players move up to a higher box and the weaker players drop down a box. Over time, everyone ends up in a group that matches their level.

How does it work?
  1. 1
Divide into boxesPlayers are randomly divided into boxes of 4, 5, 7, 8, 12 or 16 participants.
  2. 2
Everyone plays everyone in the boxWithin each box you play against all the other participants, one set per match.
  3. 3
Points per setEvery set you win earns points. The standings within the box decide who moves up or down.
  4. 4
Best players move up, weaker players drop downAt the end of the round, the best player in each box moves up and the lowest-ranked player drops to a lower box.
  5. 5
Final standings after several roundsAfter a set number of rounds or a time limit, everyone sits in the box that suits them. The winner of each box is decided by the overall standings.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

The most common box sizes are 4 or 8 players. With 4 players per box, a round is played quickly. With 8 players a full box round takes longer, but the matches become more evenly balanced as the rounds progress.

Yes, that is actually the whole idea. Beginners may start in a lower box but won't climb higher than their level. Advanced players automatically rise to the top box. After a few rounds, everyone plays at their own level.
