What is it?

What is Mexicano?

Mexicano is the smart twist on Americano. After the first round, pairs are formed based on the standings: ranks 1 and 3 play together against 2 and 4, ranks 5 and 7 against 6 and 8, and so on. As the tournament goes on, the matches get more and more evenly balanced.

How does it work?
  1. 1
Round 1: random pairingThe first round starts with randomly formed pairs, so everyone can jump straight in.
  2. 2
The standings take shapeAfter every round, all players are ranked by their total points.
  3. 3
Pairing based on the standingsPositions 1 and 3 play together against 2 and 4. Positions 5 and 7 against 6 and 8. You always face opponents of a similar level.
  4. 4
Points for every point wonEach match is played to an agreed number of points. Individual points are tracked in real time.
  5. 5
The best player rises to the topBecause the level evens out round by round, the player who performs best most consistently ends up winning.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

In Americano, the pairing each round is random. In Mexicano, the pairing after round 1 is set by the standings: you keep playing against someone of a comparable level. That makes Mexicano more evenly balanced as the tournament goes on.

Yes. Unlike Americano, the goal is not to play everyone exactly once. Mexicano is all about the standings. You can meet the same opponent several times if you are performing at a similar level.

That is up to you. Usually people play to a time limit (e.g. 2 hours) or a fixed number of rounds (e.g. 6). Slams automatically works out how many rounds fit within the time available.
