Adding and managing players

Add players by email invitation, Slams search, manually or via a CSV import, and manage their details, rating and account from the Players page.

On the Players page in your dashboard you manage everyone who plays at your club. This is where you add new players, edit names, email addresses and ratings, and link players to their Slams account. You reach the page via Players in the dashboard menu.

Four ways to add a player

At the top of the Players page there is a block with four tabs. Each tab is a different way to add someone:

  • Email invitation (recommended): enter a name and email address. The player receives an invitation and creates their own Slams account, after which they are automatically linked to your club.
  • Search for a Slams player: search by name or email among existing Slams players and add someone directly. The player keeps their existing rating.
  • Manually: add a player with just a name and a starting rating. This creates what we call a ghost player without their own account, handy when you want to fill a participant list quickly.
  • CSV import: upload a file with the columns first name, last name, email and starting rating to add an entire group at once. See Importing participants via CSV.

Ghost players and linked players

A player without their own Slams account is called a ghost player. You can still schedule them, enter scores for them and track their rating. As soon as the player creates an account, or you link them by email address, they become a linked player. From then on they can view their own results and profile. In the player list you see a Ghost or Linked label for each player.

Slams prevents duplicate players automatically. If someone with the same email address (or the same Slams profile) is added again, Slams reuses the existing row instead of creating a duplicate.

Starting rating

New players get a rating of 8.0 by default. When adding manually, you can enter a different starting value right away. Later you can adjust the rating per player in the edit screen. Want to know how ratings move after matches? Read The DSS rating explained.

Editing a player

Click the pencil icon next to a player to open the edit screen. There you can change:

  • Details: name and email address. Email addresses are unique within your club, so two players cannot share the same address.
  • Ratings: separately per sport (padel, tennis singles, tennis doubles and pickleball).
  • Account: link a ghost player to an account by email address, or remove an existing link.

In the same screen you also see the player's number of credits.

Deleting a player

At the bottom of the edit screen is the button to delete the player. You get a confirmation first. Deleting cannot be undone, so only do this for duplicate or incorrect entries. Just want to swap someone out of an ongoing competition? Then use Substituting a player instead of deleting.
